"Gold-Leaf"
As a little girl, I
was fascinated with
Pretty
with images of
Miss America
and
Cinderella
and with my
Barbie
doll.
I decided being pretty meant wearing hair.
My single mother generously agreed to this request,
but in 1961 it was no easy matter to find a wig for a child.
It required an overnight trip to the city.
And custom fittings in a special shop.
The wig itself cost $400 ---
two months salary for my mother.
In 1961 10 ounces of gold cost $350.
